There are many rivers.Every Bangalee has a river of his own. I have also one- its name is the Karnafuli. It is neither as crazy as the river, nor as calm as the river Titas. She is flowing through Rajbari with medium temper. She breaks, has a mind to build something new as well. With this temper, she has placed herself into the Bay of Bengal after passing hills-plains. There is a link of myth with the Padma, the Meghna, the Jamuna, but the story of true life and sorrow of the queen is included in the river karnafuli, from time immemorial she is running with the grief of losing the ear drop of a queen, nobody knows the date.
Thousands of people live beside the river flowing with the sufferings of losing the ear drop of the queen. There were many fisher villages on the either side of this river. When the river was not a miser, there was happiness in their. When there is hardly water in the river and crops are not available in their homes,it is impossible for them to earn their livelihood.
My grandmother was born in a fisherman village which is beside the river Karnafuli. A girl of ten year named Nodi leaving the bank of the river came to set up a household with my grandfather to the sea beach. Nodi turned into a woman from a girl. The river had beauty, but Nobi's beauty could not make him a family man. Because he was attracted by the beauty of the river. Leaving his lovely wife, the son of tow and a half year, he passed over the deep sea. It was his last journey. Then the life struggle of the lovely young woman began. This woman did not stop.Because the strong current of the river Karnafule and the unbeaten power of the Bay of Bengal were in her mind.
As I consider myself to be a sea son, the river Karnafuli is in my heart also. I can't remember how many times by boat I have visited the house of my great-grandfather.But I have an event in my memory that the birth place of grandmother turned into my second living place. There are three fisher villages on the north bank together touching the Stand Road. They are Fakirpara, Machpara and Sadorghat Fisher Village. The three villages are in one mile. That Karnafuli is the death and life adress of the people of those three rivers. The fishes which the fishermen of the three villages catch, with them, earn their livelihood. The Custom House was near Sadoeghat Fisher Village.
The ships from home and abroad carrying goods reached the bank of the river. The foreigners came here by ship.Once that fisher village turned into a prostitute village with the help of the foreigners.
